Principal components

PC1: In defensive 3rd, no shooting, high average progression, no dribbling. This is our usual starting point of separating fullbacks and wingers

PC2: Crossing, cutbacks, quality chances creating from crossing, passes from the wing a lot. This one is almost all about how wide they play

PC3: Negative on basically everything aside from shots inside the box. Being high on this means a player simply doesn't do a lot of actions per 90 minutes, bar shooting. This will be high for players who play like strikers (and are less involved in play)

PC4: Crossing, high pass distance, shooting (particularly outside the box)

PC5: Dribbling, no passing, actions in def/mid thirds

Clustering

Cluster 1: Traditional fullbacks. Defensive (high on PC1), not very wide (medium on PC2), a bit less involved generally (high on PC3), lots of crosses and long balls (high on PC4)

Cluster 2: More modern fullbacks. Defensive (high on PC1), not very wide (medium on PC2), a bit more involved generally (low on PC3), lots of passing and interplay (low on PC4)

Cluster 3: Often wing backs. Relatively defensive (medium-high on PC1), very wide (high on PC2)

Cluster 4: Almost CMs. Neutral on attacking vs defending (medium on PC1), fairly narrow (low on PC2), somewhat involved in play (medium on PC3)

Cluster 5: Playmakers. Quite attacking (low on PC1), fairly narrow (low on PC2), very involved in play (low on PC3)

Cluster 6: Out-and-out wingers. Attacking (low on PC1), very wide (high on PC2)

Cluster 7: Inside forwards. Very attacking (low on PC1), somewhat wide (neutral on PC2), somewhat involved in play (neutral on PC3)

Cluster 8: Almost strikers. Attacking (low on PC1), fairly narrow (medium-low on PC2), not very involved in play (high on PC3)

Principal components

PC1: Heading, no dribbling, receive few long balls to feet, no crossing, offsides. Usually high for strikers

PC2: Offsides, receiving long balls to feet, dribbling, heading. First two likely a proxy for runs in behind

PC3: Crossing, no dribbling, offsides, heading. Mostly about crossing and dribbling

PC4: Few offsides, heading, dribbling, crossing

Clustering

Cluster 1: Wingers and some CMs. Not much shooting (low on PC1). Lots of crossing but not dribbling (medium on PC2, high on PC3)

Cluster 2: Ball-carrying inside forwards. Not much shooting (low on PC1). Lots of dribbling but not crossing (medium on PC2, low on PC3)

Cluster 3: Attacking mids. Not much action inside the box (medium-low on PC1), rarely run in behind (low on PC2)

Cluster 4: Agile attackers that run in behind. Fair bit of shooting/heading with less dribbling/crossing than cluster 2 (medium-high on PC1), lots of offsides/long balls to feet (high on PC2).

Cluster 5: Strikers that play with their back to goal. Heading, low dribbling/crossing (high on PC1), relatively few offsides/long balls to feet (low on PC2)

Cluster 6: Traditional number 9. Lots of heading, very little dribbling/crossing (very high on PC1), some offsides/long balls to feet (medium on PC2)

Principal components

PC1: No shooting, interceptions, lots of passing, no dribbling, tackling. Passes to CBs, not to CMs. High means lots of defensive actions, few attacking actions

PC2: Shooting (outside box), dribbling, tackles/interceptions in attacking third, short/medium passes. High means lots of actions in attacking third (and middle third)

PC3: Tackling, interceptions, no shooting, no passing

PC4: No shooting, no crossing, dribbling, shorter passing. Passes to CMs, not CBs

Clustering

Cluster 1: Attacking/creative midfielder. More attacking than defensive actions (low on PC1), and lots of actions in attacking third (high on PC2)

Cluster 2: Near striker. More attacking than defensive actions (low on PC1), but not many actions in attacking third (low on PC2). There are quite a few strikers in here - just not involved in play

Cluster 3: Box-to-box midfielder. Both attacking and defensive actions (medium on PC1), lots of actions in attacking third (high on PC2). Definitely lots of passing

Cluster 4: Pure defensive mid More defensive than attacking (medium-high on PC1), but also not very involved in attacking play (low on PC2)

Cluster 5: Playmaking defensive mid. Lots of defensive actions, few attacking actions (high on PC1), but lots of passing (medium-high on PC2)

Principal components

PC1: Dribbling, no heading (and low success), no interceptions, low passing (mostly short), high tackling. Lower for actual CBs

PC2: No passing, heading (with high success), interceptions in def third, few passes received. Only defensive actions - no build up play

PC3: No interceptions, no dribbles, no heading, no tackling. Hardly involved in play at all

PC4: Defensive actions in middle rather than defensive third, no dribbling, no passing

Clustering

Cluster 1: Very defensive CBs (not ball-playing). No dribbling or passing, heading (high success), interceptions (particularly in def third), low tackling (low on PC1, high on PC2, low on PC3)

Cluster 2: Ball-playing CBs. No dribbling, lots of passing and passes received, interceptions in mid third, no tackling (low on PC1, low on PC2)

Cluster 3: More agile CBs, often acting like sweepers. High dribbling and tackling compared to other CBs (still lower than FBs/DMs), low-ish on heading, some interceptions (medium on PC1, medium on PC2, high on PC3)

Cluster 4: Mostly DMs. Dribbling, no heading, no interceptions, lots of (short) passing, (high on PC1, low on PC2, low on PC3)

Cluster 5: Mostly fullbacks. Dribbling, no passing, high tackling (high on PC1, high on PC2)

Loading...

Principal components

PC1: Low passing, low xG per shot, low cutbacks, low dribbling, lots of long passes but not long balls to feet in the final third, high goal kick distance. Being low on this PC indicates slow build up with lots of possession

PC2: Low opposition passing in attacking third, high interceptions/tackles in middle third, low interceptions/tackles in defensive third, low xG per shot, low opposition shooting. Higher on this PC indicates defending higher up the pitch

PC3: High xG per shot, lots of shots/passes inside the box, lots of opposition shots/passes inside the box, lots of cutbacks/crosses. Team both creates and concedes a lot of chances

PC4: High xG per shot, lots of GK/CB passing, lots of tackles/interceptions in middle third, low on crosses/cutbacks, high offsides, low passes in attacking third

Clustering

Cluster 1: Possession based attack, defend very deep. Low PC1, low PC2

Cluster 2: Very possession based attack. Very low PC1, plus medium PC2 (defending neither very deep nor very high)

Cluster 3: Low chances for/against. Low PC3, plus relatively high PC1 (so usually fairly direct in attack)

Cluster 4: Direct in possession. Very high PC1, plus usually (but not always) low PC2 (defending fairly deep)

Cluster 5: Defend high, high chances for/against. High PC2, high PC3

GPS Individual Weekly Report

The weekly summary values below are calculated using weeks from the most recent season in which squad training occurred and no sessions were deemed Rehab or International.

The grey rows below indicate weeks that are not included in Min Average and Max calculations above.

The average is calculated by taking the average of the Full Training Session players each day, then summing these over the week. International and Non-Starter training numbers are not used
